Hi Leah,

could you describe in more detail what you are trying to do and how you are trying to do it?
As far as I understand, Inkscape starts and can open files, but you do not know how to use the program to make your own changes.

What do you mean by 'upload'? Do you mean 'open'?
What happens when you try to make a new file? (File -> New)
What is the problem you encounter when you try to use a fill? (Only areas which have another color as boundary all round can be filled) Does it say 'Area is not bounded'? Then you need to have something in your drawing which can act as boundary. Or if you just want to change the background color, make a rectangle using the rectangle tool and put it to the bottom (End key).

Look at the status bar at the bottom of the window to see why something does not work.

Maybe you would like to follow one of our tutorials in the Help menu before you start out with your own pictures. (Help -> Tutorials)
Also, you may find some help to better understand the principles of a vector drawing program and for making Inkscape work better on OSX in our faq: https://inkscape.org/learn/faq

Regards,
 Maren
