XML Parsing Error: not well-formed

Asked by blackhorse

Inkscape will open other files fine, and it will open an earlier version of the file I want to open fine as well. But whenever I try to open the most recent version I get "Failed to load the requested file C:\Users\blackhorse\Downloads\map2.svg"

I've looked up other answers and as far as I've gotten is opening it with firefox which gives me:

XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: file:///C:/Users/blackhorse/Downloads/map2.svg
Line Number 1, Column 1:

I've tried opening it up with notepad but it's one blank line, notepad++ gives me a line of "nuls".
Is the file too corrupted?

Hi blackhorse,

this really sounds like the file is broken, yes. Where does it come from? Did you save it with Inkscape?
(We'd be interested to know about Inkscape creating broken files, of course!)

Maren,

Yes, it was a file I was working on in Inkscape and I saved it in my "downloads" folder as an .svg. It used to even pop up in "open recent" from the Inkscape file tab, but once I got the error it no longer appeared there.

Blackhorse,

did anything weird happen while you were saving the file, which might have disturbed the saving process?
(like Inkscape crashing, or you closing it accidentally)

If this is not the case and the saving looked totally normal:
Do you still have the broken file and its predecessor?
If so, could you make a new bug report, attach both files (you can add a comment with or without text for the second file), and also add some info about
- which Inkscape version you use
- which Windows version you use
- which download file for Inkscape you used
- and what kind of changes you made to the predecessor file to get the broken file

Of course it could also be that your computer's file system is corrupted, or a physical part of your computer (like RAM, harddrive) is broken, which can lead to very weird errors, but it might still be good if we could take a look.

Regards,
 Maren

Maren,

I saved it and closed just as I normally do.

I forgot to mention but when I opened inkscape up the first time that the file was corrupted, inkscape (before the program loaded) gave me the message:

:the preferences file c:\users\blackhorse\appdata\roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml is not a valid xml document.

which the solution I found said to simply delete the .xml preferences file which I did and that opening error went away. The file still didn't open however. I'm making a bug report now.
