Mac install: all menus in Korean

Asked by Ric

I am running OS X 10.10.2 and just installed XQuartz (2.7.7) and Inkscape (0.91) from the Inscape download page. XQuartz works fine, but when I start up Inkscape, all the menus are in Korean. The program seems to work, and the Korean words are not nonsense (I asked my wife who speaks Korean). Other programs that use X, such as GIMP, do not have Korean menus. I went to the Inkscape preferences, but didn't see anything about changing the language. Does anyone have an idea about how to get the menus in English? Thanks,
Ric

Check the collation (sort) order in the System preferences for Language & Text: my first guess would be that the sort order is set to Korean (or whatever language is used in Inkscape's GUI).

Inkscape's launcher shell script contains a section where it attempts to retrieve the relevant language setting from the OS (a legacy part of the script which is known to have shortcomings, and needs rewriting). The script first checks the setting 'AppleCollationOrder' in the global preferences system, and if that fails (e.g. unset, or set to default), then it attempts to retrieve the setting for 'AppleLocale'. If neither query produces a usable result, or if the result can't be expanded to a full locale string, it finally will fall back to en_US.UTF-8.

If changing the OS X system preferences for Language & Text doesn't help, you can still override Inkscape's 'System default 'language setting from within Inkscape in 'Preferences > Interface: Language' (requires a restart).

Ok, I looked at my Mac Language preferences, and Korean was listed as 2nd (I hadn't realized this since no other programs showed up in Korea). I deleted that, and now the Inkscape menus are in English.
