Northern Pacific railway logo tutorial- trace bitmap ; scans only one time and not very well. I copied the turtorial exactly.

Asked by SB

I've followed the tutorial exactly for the northern railway logo. I use the trace bitmap, single scan- brightness cutoff. I enter the values as the tutorial says and my image looks different than the example shown in the tutorial. The white circle with the words inside is visible the rest of the image is mostly black with white specs. Even after doing a multiple gray scan I do not get a different image - nothing changes. Suppress speckles is set to 50 and I have stack scans checked....no matter what I change in the dialogue the image does not change.
I have looked and looked through the forum and online for help and found nothing. Please help, thank-you!

Hi SB,

I seem to remember that there was a bug connected to non-updating preview. I'm not sure if this only affects the preview, or also the outcome of the vectorization.

The outcome of the vectorization also depends a lot on the actual size of the picture.
Try to resize the bitmap and look what happens.

Also make sure to select the picture when you vectorize.

I don't know which of these is the reason for your problem, but I think the most promising solution would be to close the dialog and open it again, or even to restart the program.

Regards,
 Maren

Or you could switch to the current Inkscape version, and see if the problem persists:

It's to be expected that your results might not look exactly like in the manual. You're undoubtedly using a different computer system than the author used when he made his illustrations (screenshots).

If you're using version 0.48.5 or below, the preview is broken. So you have to just do the trace. If it's not right, then Undo, adjust the options, and trace again. Lather, rinse, repeat, until it looks right.

If you're using 0.91, the preview is fixed. And in addition, there's a new Live Preview. You have to check the Live Preview checkbox, to see the live preview. If you don't want to use the live preview, for some reason, you have to remember to click the Update button, after you adjust the options (Threshold, etc.).

I hope that helps :-)

Can you help with this problem?
