my svg document with an imported graphic within, now totally fuzzy/useless and uneditable after closing and reopen it back

Asked by juliette

Hi,
my svg document, with an imported graphic within, now totally fuzzy/useless and un-editable after closing and reopen it back this
morning to continue working on it.

I work hours on this graphic file/ document. Yesterday, i had to import a small graphic to it and closed the app.
This morning i reopened the app and the file, and it seems all is lost, looking all fuzzy, unreadable, in one big chuck.
PLease help and let know how can i save all the work i have done on this file before i imported this graphic.
I am on a super tight deadline
Thank you.

Hi,

I noticed that .svg file/doc i was working on, has a .png extension, for some reason.
And among all the .svg files i have been working on in the last few days, 2 of these
files got a .png extension, including one without an import graphic, and that one
file also rendered totally fuzzy and useless after being reopened.

Besides checking on the file extension upon saving the file, do you have any advice
so i can avoid and/and resolve this issue again?
And if i want to send these files for professional printing, which i have to do today,
would you please tell me which extension is safe to use?

Thank you.

HI,

Does the extension of the file imported matters in the final extension for the major file?

Yesterday, i imported a file with a .pdf extension.

Today, i have to import a 2nd and last file to the major file i have to redesign, and i have the
choice between importing that file as a .png or an .eps extension.

Could you please let me know if the file extension i import matter to the final file extension,
or not?

Thank you.

Hi,
If the file is really a png (easy way to check : open with a text editor, if it looks like xml, it's svg, if it's binary it's png), there's no way you can have the structure or the vector back apart from retracing or redrawing the file (it now is a png file).
Always save as svg, and *export* as png to avoid this problem, and doublecheck the file is svg before closing the application.

If you have the choice between importing eps or png, import eps, (it's already vector, like svg).

Hi,

Ok. Im going to save as .svg and *export* as png, as well as double checking my
file is svg before closing the app.

About importing, I just tried importing an eps file earlier today, instead of a png,
for the reason you mentioned, however Inkscape refused it (!?).

One more question: when i am ready to send the file to print, should i then export it
as png please?

Thank you.

Depends on the print shop. Some will accept svg files directly, other will not... you have to ask them
