trying to do an intersection like action on a rectangle and a complex star shape, with many colored in areas of different colors.

Asked by moni

Hi,
I have a complex star shape that I "colored in" by having colored shapes behind the star path. I can't turn it all into one path because the colors all become one color.

I'd like to place the star in the corner of a business card that i'm designing. So I'd only be using a corner shape cut out of the star. If the star was a path, I could use intersection.

What can I do to cut the shape that i need from the star?

Thanks
M

Hi Moni,

you have two options:

- set a clipping path (learn how to do this here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Clip.html),
beware: browsers and some other renderers may not render this correctly, export to pdf might be problematic - so you need to export to png, if you want to use this somewhere else.

- use intersection repeatedly for every shape. Ctrl+D and Ctrl + * will be your best friends for this :)

I think there is an extension in development which will simplify this task for you soon, but I'm not sure if it is already available.

Regards,
 Maren
