Tutorial and PC responses don't agree

Asked by Charles Walbridge

Release 0.48

Attempting the supplied Basic Tutorial, I can get Inkscape to do some of the things it is supposed to, but not by the instructions. I have to grope around to find out what works.

Is 0.48 the most current release? Would a later release have the tutorial and the responses align better?

One possible complication may be that the uninstall file for (some) Inkscape doesn't exist on my machine. Do I need it to download a more current release?

Hi Charles,

the most current release is 0.48.5.
0.91 will be released very soon (as in: days to weeks)

I don't think the shortcuts for the basic functions have changed between versions in the 0.48 series (but I don't know for sure), and all shortcuts (minus one which does not work with German keyboards) work for me in 0.48.4.

The basic tutorial can also be found here: https://inkscape.org/doc/basic/tutorial-basic.html - if you want to, you can check if you find any differences to your version.
A keyboard and mouse reference for 0.48 can be found here: https://inkscape.org/doc/keys048.html .

Which shortcut exactly is it which does not work for you and what is your operating system?
Is your keyboard layout set to en-US (or en-GB)? Do you use any special kind of keyboard layout?

I'm beginning to understand what my problems were, the tutorial is now clearer.

Next question.

I have imported some svg files that I want to modify, how do i divide one of these images into separate objects?
What is the process called and where is it covered in the tutorial or elsewhere?

Hi Charles,

Group / Ungroup is what you are looking for. I think this is also covered in the basic tutorial.
If you cannot even select an object, you may need to unlock the object or the layer it is on.

 Maren
