Inkscape have created path with bezier now want to join them and fill gaps with colour. Can I?

Asked by Vincent Kelly

I have hand traced a design using the bezier tool, the lines are 4mm wide.
Now I want to join them or combine them so I can fill the spaces with colour to print. I have tried combining them but that doesn't seem to work like that. In Coreldraw it works but I have moved to a mac and now trying to do my work with Inkscape. Thank you in advance.

Hi Vincent,

In the fill and stroke dialog, there is an option in the upper right corner of the FILL tab, two buttons which look similar to a heart. They decide on how an object is filled if it has intersecting paths. Choose the button which shows a filled 'heart'.

Combining paths causes all paths with all their nodes to be included in the result, so there can be intersecting lines.

If you only care about the outline, you should use Path -> Union instead. This creates a shape with only the outer limits of the selected paths.

If the resulting path is not closed, and does not have a contiguous outline, you can join nodes using the node tool, Shift-clicking on the nodes you want to connect, and 'connecting the selected nodes with a new segment' (node tool toolbar, 5th button).

Thanks Maren

Good stuff. It may take me a while to master.

Warm regards

Hi Vincent,

just got a mail from lp, but can't see its contents displayed here...

Attachments are not supported by the lp answers section (perhaps that's the reason for it being delayed on the lp website), you could, however, upload your design at inkscape.org (into a personal gallery which we call 'InkSpace'). I'll take a look then ;-)
