shape tool not responding to curser

When I click on the eclipse shape to the left it show a small eclipse by way of the curser to use on the page, but when I try to perform the action by left clicking it displays a dotted square only with nothing else displaying. No shapes form.
The typing tool works (can write a word) but none of the shapes are displaying.
How can I use the shape tools?

Hi Diane,

try to set the fill to a flat color with A (alpha) at 255 (or 100, whichever is the maximum) and opacity to 100%. Probably they are just set to transparent ;-)

You can use the shortcut Shift + Ctrl + F to display the fill and contour dialog.
