Perspective tool yields chaotic results

Asked by freakinjonathan

Hey I'm using Inkscape version: Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 and am attempting to use the perspective extension.
Extensions -> Modify Path -> Perspective.

I'm trying to use the perspective tool on this svg file

I think the problem stems from the fact that it's using matrix transformations, but if somebody more experienced could let me know why I can't do a straight Object to path followed by a perspective operation on it.
What I've tried before attempting perspective:
Convert the entire flag to a path.
Apply #1, followed by UNGROUPING the entire flag. Then Applying #1 again.
Apply #2 followed by removing all calls to the matrix function from the text version of the svg file.
Prevent Inkscape from using relative Coordinates(File -> Inkscape Preferences -> SVG Output -> Allow relative), then applying #3.

I'm having this issue with other svg files as well. I'm not really sure what's going on.

It is correct that everything must be converted to paths. And it seems the picture you are using is kind of broken - if I ungroup everything, some rays of the sun jump away to the left and to the right, turn a bit and change their size. This seems to be caused by the fact that the rays are clones.

You must first make the clones into independent objects.

For this, you need to select the clones (without ungrouping) with double-clicks on the groups and then Edit-> Clone -> 'separate the clone link' (I've got the german version here and tried to translate, it's the third option, Shift+Alt+D).

Then you can do your perspective operations.

There are already several, probably related, bug reports about the clones issue.
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1239349, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/479638, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/802053, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/479638)

I think this is causing the follow-up problem with the perspective extension.
You could 'vote' for one (or more) of these bugs to bring them to the dev's attention.

Can you help with this problem?
