Removal of background image/art board

Asked by C.Spengler

I have non-square images that I want to remove the background (aka the art board) so it is no longer part of the image. How? I'm using the images on website as .png files.

Please explain in more detail what you are trying to achieve. I don't know if I understood you correctly.

Do you maybe want a transparent background in png files exported from inkscape?

Inkscape per default exports png images with a transparent background, unless you put an object in the background which covers the whole page or you set a background color explicitly: http://superuser.com/questions/249860/how-can-i-change-inkscapes-default-export-background-color-from-yellow-to-white

Your bitmap images will ALWAYS remain rectangles, also with a transparent background. It is not possible to make non-rectangular bitmap images with png/jpg/gif/... file format - as far as I know, with any raster image file format.

So my image is a square with rounded corners. When I export as png and upload to a website, those for corners outside of the rounded part is white and maintains the square shape of the object overall. I need that white part to be transparent.

Does the png image look correct if you open it with, say, gimp, before you upload it? (you could also import it into inkscape to check this) Are those corners transparent?

If so:
Which website do you upload to?
Some sites (like facebook) convert every picture you upload to jpg, so transparency is lost (but they save some space).

My Inkscape defaults to a white background, but the link you gave explained how to change it. Got what I needed. Thanks!
