my Swatches dialog box has only a red X

there are no colors in my swatches dialog box & I don't know how to get them. There's just a big red X. I cannot scroll in it or anything; there's nothing to scroll to.

That's normal : The swatch dialog corresponds to custom document-specific user-defined swatch, and if you never put anything in it, there's nothing to be seen :)
