How can I erase without it erasing the entire line that I drew?

How can I erase without it erasing the entire line that I drew? I only want to erase the section where I put my mouse directly, how can I do this?

The eraser tool knows two modes - you can choose between them using the options on the tool's controls bar right above the canvas. Note that the tool does not handle groups transparently: if you want to "partially" erase paths or objects within a group, you need to enter the group first (bug #280479)).
