What size is the page and can I change rulers to metric?

I wish to use metric rulers and an A4 page, how do I set this up or is it not possible?
If the above is not possible the program is useless to me.

ctrl+shift+d (file-> document properties) :

- A4 is default,
- switch "default units" to cm or mm
