Fonts not copied from Illustrator

Asked by James Campbell

Times and Times New Roman fonts in Illustrator 10 files are being changed to Sans when Inkscape opens the files, or when the files are imported into Inkscape (version 0.48.2). I've tried saving the Illustrator files as .svg files before opening in Inkscape, but the same thing happens. I can change the fonts to Times New Roman after importing, but I have to do it one at a time and there are 100+ text boxes on each page. Both Times and Times New Roman show in the list of fonts on Inkscape, but when I try to convert Sans to Times it always reverts to Sans. My goal is simply to convert these old Illustrator files (created on a iBook G4) so they can be updated and printed (using a MacPro with OS10.9). How can this be remedied?

Hhmmm....I haven't heard that problem before. But I do know there are a number of issues using Inkscape on a Mac. Here's some info on that: http://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#Mac_OS_X_specific_issues.

Yes, I do see something about fonts there, so hopefully that will be helpful. If it's not, please reply with specifics.

The link says the font recognition problem on Macs has been fixed in version 0.46 and later. That situation involved "dfonts" and microsoft fonts - neither of which I know anything about, and both of which seem irrelevant to going from one Mac to another. Does Adobe Illustrator use those types of fonts instead of True Type?

I don't know what specifics to provide other than those I mentioned in my original question. I've never used Inkscape before, so I'm wondering if there is some sort of default preference setting that is causing this to happen.

Well, unfortunately, we've reached the end of everything I know about this issue. But hopefully someone else will be able to help.

@James,

Can you try the 0.48.5 bundle to see if it fixes your issue?

Yes! All the fonts are being copied now!

Many thanks. This will save me from a difficult choice between: (a) spending weeks revising existing material on my new computer, or (b) continuing to put new work on an old hard drive I have serious doubts about.

Liam,

Well, it seems I didn't click the right button, and now I can't find it to click. It is, however, for sure that your suggestion about trying 0.48.5 solved the problem; and that I didn't solve anything.

Liam,

I'm referring to the Launchpad site buttons. When I posted my thanks for your suggestion the Launchpad page shows me as the person who solved my problem. On the bottom of this thread page it says to click "this solved my problem" at the bottom of the answer that solved my problem. The only place there is such a button is on the response from Brynn labeled #1. Since this is not what solved my problem, it doesn't seem right to do that. But it also does seem right for the site to list me as the person who solved the problem, and I've no idea how to change that.

In short, my last comment (like this one) is all about Launchpad mechanics. So far I've had no further problems with Inkscape.

Thanks again,
James
