How do I solve crashes while exporting a .png file?

Asked by Mario Saverino

HI Guys -
I am running Windows 7 and Inkscapes latest 0.48...
I have never incountered this pior and am wondering if there is a fix.

I am working on a drawing that has lots of stuff - more then what I have done in the past. Inkscape keeps crashing and is running very, very slow. In fact when I try to open the file it takes much longer then my other files. I am attaching the file, (if I can figure out how to do that).

Each time I try to export this file, Inkscape crashes.
I tried opening it in Gimp to by pass these crashes - but several areas of the drawing are missing and I can't use it that way.
I think it has something to do with the "gradients"? BUt, I might be wrong.

Does anyone know a fix for this - am I doing something wrong?
Please understand that I am not a computer wize - just an artist and graphic designer that has a deadline and does not know how to solve this problem.

Thanks!
Mario -

PS =
How the heck do you attach a file? I tried but no luck. Sorry.

You may have better luck posting in more of a typical kind of forum, where you can attach files, etc (http://inkscape.org/en/learn/).

It does sound like the size of your image is too much for your system's RAM, though.

Probably it's not opening properly in GIMP, because GIMP can't handle very sophisticated SVG content (at least that was the case a few years ago).

Assuming the problem is low RAM (relative to the image size) the only fix is going to be finding a computer with more RAM.

However, you might want to post the file (in another forum) where someone can check it to make sure. If it's a one-time deal, someone might even volunteer to do export it for you. But of course, that's not a realistic solution, if you plan on making more large files in the future.

I suppose you could export the image in parts, or maybe layers, so you have a collection of PNG files, and then assemble them in GIMP later.

Good luck :-)

Thank you Brynn -
I will do all you have suggested.
FYI: My system is running 8.00 GB of RAM.
Not sure if this is good enough.
Thanks again.

You're welcome.

8 gb RAM is plenty to run Inkscape. But a large enough file size could still challenge it.

Can you help with this problem?
