how do I unlock layers and objects? want to change text in a poster someone else designed

need to remove some clip-art and alter text in a poster someone else designed. The 'pick' tool (arrow symbol at top of tool bar?) selects the entire doc. Seem to remember when messing with this poster last year that I could highlight and edit individual components. Am a total newbie at this and the designer himself has emigrated! HELP!

What are you selecting ? (down the screen, do you read "1 group of 80 objects selected" or "1 embed image selected" ?)

If you are seleting a group, you can just ungroup it (ctrl+shift+g). If you are working on a raster image exported with inkscape, you cannot do much and have to find the svg file.
