Could you please provide more information?
1) Which OS/platform?
2) If on Windows, where did you download Inkscape from?
3) Do you embed or link on import (or does it make a difference which option you choose)?
4) Can you share a link to a sample PNG or GIF file which crashes inkscape on import?

I use Windows 8.1

partha.com

embed

I have attached a file png and gif

I re-downloaded inscape this morning and re-installed. Now the png files will both open and import. When I attempt a gif file either way, the program crashes immediately with no chance to choose the embed option.
