how to make objects on a coloured background negative

I am working on a textile print. I have a bunch of leaves as objects on a grey background. I want these leaves to not have any colour like they are cutting through the background, so the original textile is visible. How do I do this? Please HELP.

Hi Mc, Thanks ever so much. GOT IT !!! I even used the eraser tool for the freehand stuff. Thanks once again. your help is very much appreciated. would like to post the design somewhere when its complete. is there a forum for that?
