mirror image vector line drawings

Asked by James Kimbriel

I am a beginner. I only need to do one thing and that is to convert hand drawn patterns into vector paths that a laser can follow. Most of my patterns are diamond shaped with four square quadrants, each square has a 45 degree guide line from corner to corner.
My pattern is mirrored on this guide line.( I would like to show some drawings but I don't know how or if I am allowed to) Then this quarter of the drawing is duplicated and rotated around the center point three more times to complete the pattern. I have to do it this way because every thing has to be exact and symmetrical.
I am able to import my line drawing, but when I Path> create bit map, I get a very nice vector path all the way around my pencil lines, ( in other words, a double path). No good for the laser.
I suppose this wouldn't happen if I manually added a fill to my drawing before importing it. But anyway, giving up on this I created a second layer in order to get rid of the white background of my drawing. ( I don't understand layers) and manually traced the pattern with the bezier pen, which worked nicely and I'm OK with that, if there is not a better way.
Then I was able to duplicate> flip horizontally>control drag my new path to create the mirrored pattern. When I selected this quarter of my drawing with the Node tool all the nodes turned on on both sides and I was able to join the two paths by editing the nodes. Good so far!
But from that point, whether I duplicated this combined drawing or cloned it, when I rotated it around the center point of the drawing or flipped it 90 degrees the nodes no longer showed or were editable when selected by the node tool. ( the original quadrant lit up with nodes but nothing else ) They would move to complete the drawing (I assume this means they were vector paths), but I could not join them together, because I could not edit the nodes.
Is there an easier way to approach this?
Also since I am just starting out should I be learning on open source or should I buy something? If I buy something is an older(cheaper) version from Ebay OK (since this is all I need to do?)
          Thanks for any pointers!

Hi,

As for the double path, for now i know of no way to have a "line" vectorizing of a drawing, so i think the manual vector with bezier tool is the way to go (sorry). There may exist ways to do it with other tools, but i'm not aware of them.

"I was able to join the two paths by editing the nodes." -> did you use the "join selected nodes" feature ?
Can you provide a simple svg example where you have some path you want to edit, and where you cannot ? (you can upload it on dropbox or anywhere)

Thanks,

Thanks MC for replying to my question,
First you should know that this is only the second time I have ever posted
to a forum, I don't know how much of my question is visible.
I am happy with the bezier tool, and I did use the "join selected nodes
feature" successfully. This is what the drawing I imported looked like.

]
I was able to mirror this on either side of a 45 degree guide line, and
bezier paths on both sides remained visible, and I was able to join the two
halves of the resulting drawing together. with"join selected nodes"
The problem came when I tried to do this.

]
One quadrant showed the bezier path and nodes when selected with the
node tool, but the other quadrant would show no paths or nodes,so I could
not join the two drawings together, although I was able to duplicate, and
move it to finish the drawing I was not able to join the quadrants
together. Sorry I could not figure out how to provide a .svg example, I
have about 50 hours experience with graphic programs.

Hi,
here is how i did it, maybe you can see where there were any differences between what we did ? [nb : this is not perfect, and on second thought i would not combine everything (for fill purposes). But it was clearer when you can see all the nodes]

1/ vectorize, and align vertically the 4 rightmost nodes
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/437941tuto1.png

2/duplicate, horizontally mirror, and align one near the other ("2 objects of type path")
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/903156tuto2.png

3/ join nodes, and recombine back whatever needed to be recombined
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/765599tuto3.png

4/rotate 45°, duplicate, mirror
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/827872tuto4.png

5/ join nodes again
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/161964tuto5.png

6/ You have 1 object left which is, if i understand well, what you wanted.

Where were you stuck exactly ?

Thanks MC,
I'm humbled that you would spend this much effort to help me. I had about
50 hrs and $100.00 dollars worth of tutoring in that drawing,( my tutor was
very helpful but had never used Inkscape himself). My problem was with step
four, but having followed your lead, I have successfully completed the
drawing with only minor glitches. I however don't know why it worked this
time.
What I was doing differently from you is; I was using two guides
at 90 degrees and two at 45 degrees, and was snapping to guides. When I saw
you didn't use guides I removed them and made sure the four nodes on the
mirror line were selected. I then duplicated in the node tool mode,
switched to the select and transform, and ( horizontal flip> Ctrl drag) I
turned on (snap nodes or handles as you did, also snap to grids and snap to
guides) and connected the drawing with (join selected nodes). The two end
nodes combined into one.
Then before reading the rest of your instructions, I ( duplicated>flip
vertically> ctrl drag) I don't know if this might have been a mistake,
because when I ( joined selected nodes) I got two nodes right next to one
another instead of just one,
I don't know if this will be a problem to the laser. The only other problem
I had was in correcting an existing mistake. I need to join one path midway
to another where there was no end point. The best I could do there was to
lay the end node of one path on top of a node midway on the other.
Note; I will be cutting this on a small laser set up to use a
Correl draw file, not a big one that needs a CADD file, so it shouldn't be
so picky.
        The questions I have are:
Do you think the guides were the problem ?.
Does it matter what type of nodes were selected on the mirror line?
I noticed you had the (align and distribute) dialog box open, was it
important to have (align relative to last selected) enabled?
In step 4 you said "rotate 45 degrees>duplicate> mirror", is ( mirror) the
same as ( flip >drag)?.
Does it matter if you duplicate in (node) mode or (select and transform) or
do both work?
Again thanks for your help, I was running out of time to invest in this
project. Nobody in my small hometown uses Inkscape.I would like to send you
one of these when they are done ( wood marquetry) if you could figure out
how to exchange addresses.

Two other questions;
In step two what is meant by "2 objects of type path"? (don't bother answering if it's not important)
Also in step two you are still in " layer 1" how did you get rid of the drawing and its background?

Hi,

Do you think the guides were the problem ?
-I don't think so. Guides should work as intended, and not prevent any of my steps, i simply prefer to use the align and distribute panel than to snap on a guide (actually i never used any guide), but that's purely a personnal choice.

Does it matter what type of nodes were selected on the mirror line?
-No... you can join any type of node, the only important thing is the look of your curve :)

I noticed you had the (align and distribute) dialog box open, was it important to have (align relative to last selected) enabled?
-Err, no. have any of your choice, just ensure that gives you the result you want (relative to page might no give the good result, for instance) ^^

In step 4 you said "rotate 45 degrees>duplicate> mirror", is ( mirror) the same as ( flip >drag)?.
-Yes, i meant flip.

Does it matter if you duplicate in (node) mode or (select and transform) or do both work?
-both should work equally.

Again thanks for your help, I was running out of time to invest in this project. Nobody in my small hometown uses Inkscape.I would like to send you one of these when they are done ( wood marquetry) if you could figure out how to exchange addresses.

- << https://launchpad.net/~mc.../+contactuser >> should work :)

In step two what is meant by "2 objects of type path"? (don't bother answering if it's not important)
- Down the screen, there is a line which details what is selected. There is a way to duplicate called "clone" and which does create an image of the first object which is *not* editable (it's a "reference" to the first object. if you modify the first one, the clone is modified.). If you had a clone (the line would then be "1 path and 1 clone"), you would not be able to see or move its nodes or to merge it with the first object before unlinking it, so i was just making sure of this (it could have caused the problems you mentionned).

Also in step two you are still in " layer 1" how did you get rid of the drawing and its background?
- select it and press the <delete> key ?

Good luck :)

I think my problem was partially that I was trying to work with clones, I was truly stuck. In any case I should be good now.
Thanks
