Using Fonts

I would like to use a shadow and outline text in a graphic. Is it possible to do with inkscape? If so, how do I do it?

shadow : duplicate, blacken, blur, put behind (or move) [[or just "drop shadow" effect]] ?
outline : just draw outline, convert to object, and "outline to path" ?
