[Solved]SVG shapes instead of paths?

Asked by Iain Houston

I used Inkscape to trace a bitmap image and got a wonderful SVG result. I notice that it consists of many shapes: each one filled with the colour in the original image.
However, I cannot re-create this. Each time I use Trace from Bitmap I get an SVG file consisting only of monochrome paths (rather than filled shapes).
I cannot see any way of recreating what I originally did .... there are so many options I do not understand.
I'd be very gratefu for your help.

I was trying different combinations of Edge Detection rather than Colour Scans.
It seems that Edge Detection created Monochrome Paths whereas the Colour Scans create colour-filled shapes.
Thanks to dopey at http://askubuntu.com/questions/301540/export-image-as-svg-in-gimp for pointing me to the (now) obvious!
