Choosing object to clip instead of clipping the newly created object.

Asked by 80063r

I created a new document > default. Then created a rectangle (blue) then created a circle over one corner (red) then held shift and clicked the rectangle so both were selected and used Clip > Set and the CIRCLE got clipped. How do I clip the rectangle instead?

Hi,

According to Tavmjong Bah (http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Clip-Clipping.html), the clipping is based on the Z-order, i.e. the shape "on top" will be used to cut into the shape "behind". You can then use the Page Up and Page Down keys to bring the shape you want to be the clipping mask on front, then select both shapes and apply your clipping.

You can also use boolean operations if you want to substract a shape or keep the intersection or whatever (in the Path menu, note that your shapes will be automatically converted to paths).

Regards
