Auto re-size Page to Drawing Size

Asked by Brian Geering

Can you set Inkscape to Automatically re-size the Page to the size of the Drawing when you close the File ???

I know you can do it manually in the document properties (shift+ctrl+d) but I keep forgetting about it.

Hi,

It's IMHO not a good idea. A lot of people keep things out of the page (like references or color swatches, shapes to be duplicated, etc. ). so a lot of people (me included) DONT want all of the drawing to be part of the document (eg when exporting to PDF or PNG). It's then a good thing to keep this option available but not automatic.

Why post a reply that has absolutely nothing to do the question I was asking.

I just want an answer to my question (if there is one)

Brian,

What I was saying is it is not ATM possible, and was trying to explain why to give you more information. On a side note, keep in mind that the people who answer your questions here are volunteers If my answer doesn't suit you, which I would totally understand, then explain why so it can be answered better and please skip the "why..." part.

Edouard, thanks for that. I must apologize for my last post as after reading it back to myself it's a little blunt - sorry, not intended.

My problem - I am only using Inkscape to do some simple drawings and diagrams, (I am a bit of a Novice) when done I export/save them as a PNG, when I go to use the PNG I get either only part of the diagram or a small diagram on a large page, I hope that makes more sense as to why I am looking for the Auto option.

Hi Brian,

Lets forget this misunderstanding, and go ahead with your problem.

I think an easy fix would be to get the habit, when you're exporting to PNG (CTRL SHIFT E or File > Export bitmap), to choose (in the upper part of the window) the "Drawing" button, which then exports to PNG everything you've drawn, regardless of if it's inside the page boundaries or not.

Another way would be to, first, select the part of the drawing you want to export, then go to the Export bitmap menu and choose "Selection". This way you could export only a part of your drawing, if need be.

The firts solution is IMHO better in case of simple, "quick" drawings where everything shown on canvas has to be output in the final image.

Regards
