Reopen an eps file after saved a JPG file into an EPS file

Asked by AH Holding BV

How a JPG picture save as an EPS of AI file and with what kind of progrms I can reopen this saved vectorised picture again..? I need to send vectorid files for artwork but I get sometimes only JPG files

Sometimes we get a JPG logo or file of our clients. Our factories does only accept an .EPS or .AI file to make an artproof for approvement.

So far we understood we can save a copy as an EPS file of that JPG file.
We did it, but unfortunately we cannot reopen this EPS file with any program not even with inkscape to check if the logo or picture has been vectorised. So this vectorised could be send to our factories for a creation of artwork

There are programs as Vector Magic, but these are not free

Thanks for an explanation and help

Hi,

Here's the part of the manual by Tavmjong Bah about tracing bitmaps in Inkscape (meaning, converting it from bitmap to vector) : http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html

Nevertheless, it's a non obvious task and you won't be able to achieve much this way, as you'll lose transparency, gradients, details etc... So most of the time you'd better ask your client for a vector image first or redraw it from scratch, using the jpg on a layer underneath your working layer.
