How do I make the background transparent behind my image so that I can overlay it on a photo?

Asked by Kirk Lewis

I'm trying to create a logo that I can use as a watermark over a photo. I can't seem to figure out how to get my logo to have a transparent background. When saved as a .png (required by my photo editing software) the entire page is inserted with a solid white background. I want to just have the logo resting on the photo without the white square around it.

Hi,

That's odd, since the default behaviour of Inkscape is to export transparency in the PNG where there is no shape. Are you sure you haven't a white rectangle drawn behind ? If your watermark is based on a bitmap image imported in Inkscape, maybe this image is not transparent and has a white background ? If so, you should first use a bitmap editor to remove this white background in your image before importing to Inkscape.

If your watermark is 100% pure vector made with Inkscape, then there might be either a white rectangle behind, OR your photo editing software doesn't support alpha transparency or PNG 24 and only PNG8 (with only binary transparency, which means its either fully opaque or fully transparent).

Please have a look at all this and if the problem is still there, let us know.

Regards
