Inkscape

Alt-click on a Mac

I'm using a MacBook Pro (manufactured in 2006), and trying to learn Inkscape. The documentation says that "Alt+click" will select under (i.e. select something obscured by something else.) It doesn't seem to work for me. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
