How do I get rid of the square on the layout screen?

I'm new user of Inkscape.

When I open Inkscape a square appears on the layout screen. How do I get rid of it? Where are the Tools heading?

Hi,

The square in the layout screen is the border of your page. Sure you can get rid of it (by going to File > Document properties and unticking "Show page border", but this border is usefull : that's the border of your visible drawing, i.e. an SVG viewer will only show the part of the drawing that's inside this page. It's also used when exporting to PDF (only the inside of this page will be visible), and can be used for PNG exportint as well. So you'd better set your page according to your project (still in Document properties) by setting a page size (A4, letter, or whatever format suit your needs). By the way, setting this will allow you to better use the "Align and distribute" tool,which can be very handy.
