How to crop images

I want to use just one part of an imported image, how could I just take the section wanted and paste within a new design.

you draw a rectangle (etc) over that part of the picture that you need, select both and then Object -> Clip -> Set.
It would be interesting to know though, whether the entire picture is then still saved in the final file (regarding the file size).

Yes, it is - clipping is a non-destructive operation.
