"limited image not found" error message

Asked by D Bennett

I'm using a different computer, in a different city; installed Inkscape (which I had on my other PC) on this laptop and tried to open a map I had done on Inkscape on PC .svg saved type... It opens a skeletal piece of i t and says "limited image not found"... I had done the map over a street map imported from another source... is that the problem? Do I have to do a whole new import? I will if I have to... And, how do I get rid of the "limited image not found"?

Hi,

When you import a raster image (png, bmp, jpg) into Inkscape, as you've surely noticed, Inkscape asks if you want to link to this picture or embed it in the document. The difference is that if the resource is linked, Inkscape only stores (in the SVG file) the path to the image ("c:/my docs/my image.png") instead of the whole image which can be large. It makes the SVG file smaller, in a big way, and allow to modify the raster image outside Inkscape BUT if you move your SVG file on another computer, Inkscape will search for the file linked "my image.png" in "c:/my docs/", and won't find it.

So to avoid it from now on, choose "embed" so the image is embedded into the svg file (and moving the file won't be a problem).

For now, you can open the original svg on the original computer (where the image will display) and choose Extension > Images >
Embed All Images, then save your SVG. Or if you have the png/jpg raster image, either put it exactly at the same place on your new computer or put it somewhere, and open the svg file with a text editor, search for your original path ("c:/my docs/my image.png" in my exemple) and replace it with the new path.

Regards
