Personal imported images

I am trying to develop my logo. I imported a picture from an online source and uploaded it to the inkscape drawing board. I only want a small portion of the picture to work with but I am having a difficult time choosing the part I would like to work with. I dont want the entire picture just a small portion from it. I tried to select it and draw a node around it and cut it but i just cant seem to get it right. pls help

Hi,
you could use Masking for that,
- draw a rectangle on top of your image on the piece you want to keep
- make it fully opaque, 100% white
- select both the background image and the white rectangle
- choose Object > Mask > Set (or Object > Clip > set)
