I Have 3 objects on the page, I cannot ungroup them

Asked by Wayne Morley

I imported an image into Inkscape, consisting of a deer antler and a mirror image of that antler. They are separated with a space between them. I then imported another image, a rifle, into the same page. Now when I "select" them I automatically select all three items and I cannot select any individual object. I have tried to ungroup them to no avail. I have also grouped them and then ungrouped them but still unable to select individual objects. Does this have something to do with "importing" images from other files? This is my first attempt at using Inkscape and I have gone thru the basic tutorial but not the others yet.

When I first imported the two files into Inkscape, I played around with them and saved the file as a .svg file. The next time I opened the file I was unable to select individual items as noted before. If the file successfully "saved as" a .svg file then am I correct in assuming it is now a vector file even though the originals may have been other types.

Hello Wayne,

Could you please open the XML editor and confirm you have a <svg:g> element and 3 <svg:image> elements?
When selecting your objects, you should see a specific message in the status bar (at the bottom of the canvas) saying either "Group of 3 objects in layer..." or "3 objects of type Image...'. Could you please confirm?

Regards.

When I open the XML Ed. it does not give me the information you requested.
When I try to select individual objects (either the rifle or one of the two
antlers) I am unable to select them. If I drag a box around all 3, I can
select them all at once. When I select them this way, there is no message
at the bottom of the XML Ed. indicating what it is that is selected (does
not say 1 object or 3 objects and/or the type of image). If I click on the
page it toggles from unselected to "all the nodes" showing on all three
items. I am very new to Inkscape, I should have done all the tutorials
before asking questions I guess but I only had this one project in mind when
I downloaded Inkscape. I appreciate your interest.

Hello Wayne,

Sorry for the delay...

The selection information should be seen in the main window's status bar, not in the XML editor dialog. Are you sure there's nothing when you select your group?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Wayne Morley for more information if necessary.
