How to load .psd file into Inkscape

Asked by Jerry Robbins

I want to add some clouds to an Inkscape dwg file. I found what I want, clouds with transparent background, but they have a .psd extension. My research shows it is a photoshop extension, but I found a link (inkscape-psd_import-0.1.1.zip) online at (http://pernsteiner.org/inkscape/psd_import/) to add an extension to inkscape to load .psd files. It didn't work. I keep getting error codes when I try to extract using WinRAR which I downloaded for a free trial. Can you tell me how to get the file into Inkscape?

Thanks, Jerry.

Hi,
Not a real answer, but in the page you linked to, it's stated that only the vector part of your PSD would be imported through this extension. Chances are, the cloud is bitmap and importing won't work no matter what.
I suggest you find a cloud image directly in SVG (http://openclipart.org/search/?query=cloud).
More to the point, if it's a problem with WinRAR, I suggest you have a look at the open source (and free) replacements like 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) or PeaZip (http://peazip.sourceforge.net/), ..., assuming you are a windows user.
Last, once easy thing you could try is to open your PSD in The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) and export as a PNG with transprency, that is easily imported in Inkscape.

Regards

Thank you Edouard. I am new (brand new) at Inkscape and everything for that matter. I appreciate your help and advice. I will try 7zip as you suggested, then maybe I can open with Gimp.
If it doesn't work, at least I know a little more than I knew before.
Thanks again,
Jerry

You can open PSD in Gimp & convert it to PNG / JPG, if want to import in Inkscape.
