Cannot enter sketch mode by Alt+drag.

Asked by Annada Prasad Behera

I'm using Linux Mint KDE Olivia 15. To enter into 'sketch mode' by freehand Tool, I have to Alt+drag. But just like every other application, Alt+drag is moving the whole window. How to workaround?

Yes, that is a shortcoming due to limited number of modifier keys on a standard keyboard. Affects me too on Ubuntu Linux. You will have to remap the desktop environment keyboard shortcuts for moving windows. There is a way to remap keys within Inkscape but I'm sorry to say that I came up with nothing on how to actually change the keyboard shortcut for the function you're asking about. I will leave your question open for others to answer as well.

btw. which version of Inkscape are you using?

I'm using Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939. Please tell me how to remap the keys such that Alt+drag doesn't move the whole window. I seldom use that function. I drag the title bars if I have to.

Inkscape's keyboard shortcut (Alt+drag) cannot be remapped at runtime - it is hard-coded.

This Inkscape FAQ entry described how the keyboard shortcut(s) can be disabled or modified for various desktops/window managers on Linux:
<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#How_can_I_make_Alt.2Bclick_and_Alt.2Bdrag_work_on_Linux.3F>

Alternatively, you could try to work around the conflict in Inkscape by pressing 'Ctrl+Alt' instead of 'Alt':
<http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.user/15001/focus=15004>
or a similar method as described in the same related recent thread on the mailing list:
<http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.user/15001/focus=15005>
