a 300kb image + 4 letters of a font result in a 57mb svg file?

Asked by roxey lucia

it seems when i create some image files where i add text , the stored svg file is quite large and makes it hard to reload these files in inkspace. in some cases i have had to export the text file as a png and then retrace it to make the file smaller. i can't figure out what is going on. when i take the large svg file and store it out as a png file, the size of the file is reduced dramatically. does the size of the font have anything to do with it?

Hi,

This is very strange. I've tried myself with a 300 Kb image too, and the resulting SVG is about 550 Kb with a little text, which is to be expected, accounting the fact that Inkscape converts the JPG file to Base64 (which creates a minimum 33% overhead). But 57 Mb sounds weird.

You could nevertheless link to the image instead of embedding it into your SVG while you're working on it, and embed it at the very end of your work, for transmission or backup purposes. To do so, when you File>Import an image, select 'Link" in the box. At the very end of your work, to embed the image(s), go to Extension>Images>Incorporate all images.

It doesn't solve your problem though : text is very lightweight and should absolutely not create such a bump in your file size. What's more it's vector so font size doesn't change anything noticeable to the file size...

If you were storing your file as a PDF, I would think the DPI conversion could be accountable for the bump in size.

Regards
