Inkscape tool changing issues on windows 8

Asked by kip travis

First let me say I have been using ink-scape for years. That being said I use it mostly for light design work and I am not what you would call computer savvy, Code etc... are over my head. I recently purchased a laptop running windows 8 with an intel i7-3520m cpu with 8 GB Ram on a 64-bit operating system (don't know if the specs are relevant but just in case).

Inkscape is version 0.48.4-1 win32 (didn't see a win64)

The problem is when I try and change tools it will not allow me to until I double click and open the preference window. After I close the window it will allow me to change functions...once. I must then double click again etc... I have re-installed twice but the problem remains.

Any ideas?
Thanks, Kip

I Forgot to note that I am using a Lenevo idea pad P-500. I just found some similar posts on this problem and a common denominator seems to be "Lenevo" in many cases. Tried changing to "best performance" as recommended but it made no difference.

I just installed inkscape on my wife's new Asus laptop running Windows 8 and the program works fine. Possible Lenovo software issue?

I have the same problem on both my ASUS and Dell Laptops. They are both running Windows 7. It is driving me insane. I typically can't even click a part of a picture to highlight it. I have to use the mouse to make a box encompassing the full figure. Then I can't even move it with the mouse - I have to move it with directional arrows (maybe because inkscape thinks that this is a tool change from arrow to hand).

It would be great is someone could help us out on this.

After reading more, it looks like I fixed the problem for me. It's, as was said in a related issue, associated with Windows Desktop Manager. Here's what I did:

Go to Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Adjust visual effects > Uncheck "Enable desktop composition".

If it helps, I have everything here checked except: Enable desktop composition and Save taskbar thumbnail previews.

This is working on my Dell, but I cannot work on my ASUS until later. Hopefully this continues to work.

Can you help with this problem?
