Can I make a copy of object just using ctrl + mouse dragging?

Asked by John Lin

Just like when I drag files with pressing ctrl key, I can make a copy of the file.
Can you add this feature in Inkscape?
Or is it already in it and I just didn't know it?

Thank you!

Tap the space bar while dragging (or scaling, rotating, skewing) an
object with the select tool, to drop a copy:

This is a nice feature, but what if you want to leave the original untouched?

In my case, I'm carefully positioning items manually along a curve. After I position an element, I want to drag a new copy, leaving the original in tact.

Is that possible?

In Adobe software you use a modifier while dragging to copy. It indicates this by returning the source item to its original location on screen, and you keep the copy you're dragging. This feels very natural once you're used to it. I'd like an Inkscape equivalent, if possible.
