Text on Path will not move relative to path

I am able to create the text on a path, but can't get the text to shift along the path. Alt- arrow just moves the text away from the path in the direction of the arrow. I am running Inkscape in XQuartz 2.6.3/Mac OS 10.5.8. I have tried other modifier key combinations but just can't get the text to slide along the path. Thanks for any help! This should be intuitive, but I am missing it!

Did you change the X11/XQuartz preferences to make the 'alt/opt' key
work as expected?

Yes, I get feed back at the bottom that indicates the Alt key is depressed; cursor changes from a hand to a clinched fist. But the text just moves horizontally or vertically. If the text is selected, the Alt- arrow moves just the text Horz or Vert. If the path is selected, Alt-arrow moves both text and path Horz or Vert. I still can't get the text to move along the path. Thanks for helping me work through this.

I finally stumbled on the answer to my problem and provide this so that other browsers of the knowledge base might be helped. I was selecting the text I wanted to move with the selection tool, not the text tool. When the text which has been attached to a path is clicked on with the text tool, a red cursor appears. If the red cursor(normal to the path of the text) is at the beginning of the line of text, all of it will shift along the path by using Alt+Arrow keys as indicated in the help file. Using the selection tool(arrow) just selects the text box with the usually handles for reshaping. Alt+Arrow will only move the whole block of text in the direction of the arrow, and not along the path.
