Text over a rectangle doesn't show up in browsers

Asked by Warren Spencer

Hello,

I created a rectangle. Then I created some text, positioned over the rectangle. Both on the Layer 1. The text is visible. Exported to both Inkscape SVG and plain SVG. When I load that file into Firefox, IE, or Chrome (current versions, May 2013), the rectangle is displayed but the text is not. Being a bit new to this, I have these questions:

- Are my browsers not supporting SVG fully?
- Is there a work-around for this problem?

Many thanks,

ws

Please read
<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#What_about_flowed_text.3F>
and
<http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Text-Creating.html>

Hint:
1) If you don't have a special need for flowed text, avoid it (do not
click-drag with the text tool: simply click once and enter the text
right away, to create a regular text object. Click-dragging a text frame
first OTOH will create a flowed text object - with the known problems in
other SVG viewers).
2) Else - if your work depends on using flowed text - convert the flowed
text to regular text (menu 'Text > Convert to Text') and then save the
file under a different name (i.e. keep the original SVG with flowed
text, and save a copy with the converted text for sharing / publishing).
Repeat after any edits to the flowed text in the original SVG file.
