I'm trying to create transparant text and the Path - Outset function won't work

According to the tutorial I'm following, one of the steps needed to create transparant text is selecting the text and "outsetting" it to increase the size. When I click on Path - Outset nothing happens. I tried the shortcut CNTRL + ( but that does not work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You probably need to convert your text into path first. See Path → Object to path.
