What file type should I use for website graphic?

Since this question had been asked in Inkscape's 'Answers' section:
Please note that Inkscape only exports to PNG (which is just fine for website graphics by the way). If you want to use other raster image formats, you will have to convert the PNG to the format of your choice with an external tool.

I like .png because:
1) .png supports transparency. (jpg does not)
2) .png compression is non destructive (you can always get the original image back) while .jpg is destructive and creates "artifacts which can become quite disturbing if compression is too strong or if the jpeg is saved and resaved many times.
3) .png has always been free (.gif was not)
Most of what you find on the web are .jpgs with ensuing problems of resolution and artifacts.
