Area specific image selection

I want to select only the area covered by a bird in a jpg image downloaded from the internet and opened in inkscape. Like photoshops magic wand can do relatively well.

Use Photoshop or GIMP to delete the background and save as TIF or PNG image to preserve transparency. Then drag your file to Inkscape.
