How do I select an area of a given color, like GIMP's Magic Wand?

Asked by Terry Cloth

I have an image generated by vectorizing a .PNG (which Inkscape did a great job of). However, a large, irregular, area that contained a gradient is now a series of stripes of varying hues. I want to put those stripes into a single selection so I can tell Inkscape to make it a gradient, but I'd rather not have to draw paths to outline the area. Is there a straightforward method to
 a) select a region which is all one color (à la GIMP's Fuzzy Select Tool, aka magic wand), and
 b) combine these selections into one selection?

Alternatively, did the vectorization make these stripes objects behind the scenes? If I could select them as objects, that would be even better, but so far as I can tell, the image is one monolithic object.

Thanks for your kind attention to this request---I've got a lot to learn about Inkscape.

There is no such tool in Inkscape. But you could try touch selection. With Selector tool, press and hold Alt, start drawing a line touch objects that you wish to add to selection.

Ah, well. I feared there was no such. Unfortunately, so far as I can see, vectorization created seven objects, each of which is a complex path with no relation to the pieces I want to work on. (I could easily be wrong---I've been working with Inkscape for a whole week.)

So I ended up defining a path to follow all the contours of the area, and now it's ready for installing the gradient. Thanks for the info.

To follow up, in case anyone has a related question in the future:
If you have a vector drawing, with a lot of shapes of various colors, and you want to quickly select the shapes that are one particular color:
  1. Choose Edit > XML Editor to open the XML Editor window
  2. In your drawing, click on one of the shapes that is the color you want to find.
You should see that shape become highlighted in the XML Editor window.
  3. In the XML Editor window, click on the "style" attribute. You'll see the style values for the object below,
including an attribute like "fill:#008000" (for a green-colored object). Copy that text.
  4. Choose Edit > Find to open the Find dialog.
  5. Paste the style text (like fill:#008000 ) into the "style" field.
  6. Click the Find button to select all objects in your drawing which are filled with that color.
