How can I make pattern repeats?

I would like to create a pattern repeat from a scanned design. How can I do this?

You can create custom pattern fills from regular objects with menu 'Object > Patterns > Objects to Pattern', and then use that custom pattern as fill for any object in your current drawing (via 'Object > Fill and Stroke…').

A more advanced technique to create complex tilings or seamless (vector-based) patterns can be achieved with help of 'Tiled Clones'. Tavmjong Bah offers a detailed tutorial here:
