Multiple element selection in XML Editor

Asked by Phil Cook on 2012-05-22

Is it possible to select multiple element nodes within the XML Editor?

Consider the following pseudo-code layered example:

<rect: fill: blue>
<text stroke:white>Hello
<rect fill:yellow>
<text fill: blue>Hello

Place the blue rectangle next to the yellow rectangle and align both text nodes to the combined centre. It is difficult to select just the two text nodes to align them particularly with other nodes in place; however this should be trivial from within the XML Editor.

Current Inkscape versions cannot select multiple nodes in the XML Editor.

This feature has been requested before and is tracked in
Bug #170159 (sf899722) “XML Editor: editing in the list, multiselect, etc”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170159>

With regard to selection methods: you can e.g. find (select) by Object type (within the current selection, layer or drawing) using 'Edit > Find…':
<http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Select.html#Select-Find>

Note: 'Edit > Find…' has been refactored and enhanced with an additional 'Replace' feature in the current development version (for the next major release 0.49), see also:
Bug #909328 “Find / Replace dialog”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/909328>

Can you help with this problem?
