Contour Lines

How do I add contour lines to existing text. I have Inkscape 0.46

Sorry, but I'm a graphics dummy!

What I have done:

* I entered text on a fresh page (the word "Text")
* Then I selected all the text
* Then I hit Ctrl+Shift+F
* Then I hit ENTER

Nothing happened. There was no change on screen. No contour lines displayed.

Can you give me a few more clues what to do?
