Can't bend text inside of an oval I created

I am trying to create a "vehicle nationality sticker"....you know, the white oval, outlined in black, that has "GB" for Great Britain on it....it's actually for the Parrot Head Club of Western New York....which is the phrase I am trying to print along the bottom of the oval curve.

I have followed the manual instructions, to no avail...I am somewhat confused at the part where it says "select both path and text" and feel that may be the root of my problem (like I only have one problem....just ask my wife!)

HELP!!!!

To select multiple objects at once you can drag a rectangle around these so that they entirely fit into these. But you could also hold down Shift key on keyboard while clicking on objects.
