program times out when using paint bucket

Now in addition to my issues with the paint bucket, the program keeps "timing-out" every time I click an object to be colored with the paint bucket tool. A little clock appears on the screen and I am unable to do anything with inkscape for 1-2minutes. When it's finished and I have control of the program again, I still have no color where I attempted to use the paint bucket!

Also after one of my attempts to use the paint bucket tool, the program shut down. Help please.

You might want to make sure you click inside a completely surrounded area.
