meaning of iconify

Asked by Carol Blair

In the "Trace Bitmap" (Shift+Alt+B) window, next to the close window button is an arrow button that says "iconify" when you scroll over it. What does this mean?

It means "Minimize". I don't think that button should be there.

It's a useful feature of dockable dialogs: these kind of dialogs can be undocked (Trace Bitmap dialog), or docked in the main window (Fill and Stroke dialog) by default (the settings are remembered across sessions), and they can be minimized (iconified) into the dock:

This feature belongs to an external library used by Inkscape to manage dockable dialogs and docks (libgdl). It is not an inkscape-proprietary feature. If you don't want or need it, you can disable dockable dialogs altogether in the preferences (Preferences > Windows > Dialog Behavior).
