Updating changes tags in the XML

I'm new to SVG processing/editing and downloaded Inkscape to try it to modify some work-related XML files.

I edited a very simple XML file with tags such as "XYZ_PROGE03_MDS.XU43" and when I looked at the XML I found that many (not all) instances had been changed to tags such as "g21947". The file still seems to process successfully but the original author is not satisfied with the changes.

Is it possible to configure the Inkscape to NOT make changes like that?

I do not think so. You might want to file a bug report about it.
